🤩The Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, Minister of Energy Tinne Van der Straeten and State Secretary for Economic Recovery Thomas Dermine toured the #PrincessElisabethIsland shipyard in Vlissingen today🏝.   🏗It’s been one year since the first contract for the construction of the island was awarded to the TM EDISON consortium, which is made up of DEME Group and Jan De Nul Group. Today, the first of the island’s caissons (or foundations) has almost been completed; it will be transported out to sea and installed on the seabed later this summer🌊.   🏝The Princess Elisabeth Island is the world’s first artificial energy island which will combine both high-voltage direct current and alternating current (HVDC / HVAC)⚡. It will act as an energy hub that collects and transports the green electricity produced by wind farms in the #PrincessElisabethZone back to shore and will also serve as a landing point for interconnectors that link Belgium to its European neighbours.   👷♀️Each of the island’s caissons weigh 22.000 tonnes and take about three months to build. We’re thrilled to announce that we have joined up with industry leaders STROOHM - KMO van het JAAR 2023 UNIZO Antwerpen, Powered by Zeno and Arcade Groep to work on a study that will explore smarter charging solutions for electric vehicles.    As we transition towards carbon neutrality, the demand for electric vehicles is skyrocketing. Elia Transmission Belgium won the ‘Offshore Development Award’ as part of the Belgian Offshore Days 2024 conference. The conference brought together Belgian experts who, collectively, are recognised as global trailblazers in their field, meaning the award was a great triumph for the ETB teams involved.   ETB was granted the award in recognition of its work on the Princess Elisabeth Island – the world’s first energy island that it is building 45 km off the coast of Belgium. The island will serve as an energy hub that will connect new wind farms and further interconnectors to Belgium’s onshore power grid. ETB is currently constructing the island with help from DEME Group and Jan De Nul Group, with the three companies establishing a great partnership for its successful completion.   Projects such as the energy island have put Belgium firmly on the map as a front-runner in offshore development. There is a great deal of international interest in the future energy hub, and this has provided the country with a great way to showcase its expertise in the area. In addition to being crucial for Belgium’s energy transition, the island will contribute to Belgium’s blue economy.   The Belgian Offshore Days 2024 conference rewarded front-runners from across the Belgian offshore sector during its ‘Offshore Oscars’ ceremony. Geert Moerkerke, the Head of Assets Offshore at Elia, and Catherine Vandenborre, the interim CEO of Elia Group, accepted the award on behalf of ETB. Congratulations to them and to the other award winners: Sirris | Innovation forward, Vestas, Sarens, Aertssen Group and Blauwe Cluster (Blue Cluster) vzw! 🏆Team Elexide has won Elia Group’s third hackathon! 👏   💻Over the past three days, over 100 participants joined us in Brussels to work on unlocking consumer flexibility from across the electricity system, which will be essential for guaranteeing the success of the energy transition🌏. They explored how flexible assets – such as electric vehicles and heat pumps – could be controlled remotely in response to real-time system needs, as reflected by real-time electricity prices⚡.   🤩The winning team, Elexide, impressed our judges with their innovative, scalable and customer-oriented solution. Their project demonstrated the role e-mobility can play in the energy transition. 🚗Steering directly EVs through the car API based on a real-time price and being able to demonstrate this live, was a determining element.
