Stormy weather breaks wind records in Belgium and Germany
March was a windy month for Europe. The stormy weather had a big impact on the electricity mix. Storm Luis set a new wind record at 50Hertz on 13 March, leading to 16.5 GW being safely integrated into the system. Winds in Belgium hit a peak on 10 March. At 11:15 p.m., 4 GW of wind energy was recorded, exceeding the previous record that was set on 19 January (3.88 GW).

Elia Group Open Innovation Challenge

78 submissions received for the Open Innovation Challenge

The call for project submissions for our Open Innovation Challenge was met with great enthusiasm, as we received 78 submissions from 32 countries. This year's Challenge, which is our fifth, is focusing on innovative applications for offshore wind. Elia Group will now invite 15 of the 78 companies to move through to the next round. These companies will receive guidance and training to help them refine their projects. After five weeks of training, a judging panel will choose five finalists. The winning company, which will be announced during the competition’s closing event in Berlin on 21 June, will receive €20,000 as well as the opportunity to develop their project within Elia Group.

PST
PST comes online in Monceau-Sur-Sambre
A phase-shifting transformer (PST) has been successfully commissioned at the Monceau-sur-Sambre high-voltage substation. The PST is an important element of Belgium’s interconnection with France. It is the latest milestone to be reached as part of a major investment project in the province of Hainaut. The project involves the upgrading of five substations and the laying of 60 km of cable, ensuring an improved supply of electricity in the region.

Elia Group launches improved Inside Information Platform

Elia Group has launched an improved Inside Information Platform (IIP), which includes data visualisations about the unavailability of electricity supply in the high-voltage grids operated by Elia (Belgium) and 50Hertz (Germany). Belgian market participants can use the platform free of charge to ensure efficient public access to their inside information. With the upgraded IIP, Elia Group is bolstering its commitment to digitalisation, consumer-centricity and transparency in the interest of society.

First installation without SF6 gas now in use
At the Charlottenburg substation near Berlin, 50Hertz has taken an important step towards making our substations more sustainable. For the first time, gas-insulated switchgear that does not contain SF6 gas has been deployed; it uses an alternative gas, g³. If leaks occur, g³ is less harmful to the environment. The new insulating gas is now being rigorously tested and evaluated.

Using drones and artificial intelligence to inspect pylons
Elia Group will use drones to inspect 400 of its high-voltage pylons this year. The project is part of our ongoing efforts to achieve efficiency gains by deploying new technologies, be it in terms of system operation, grid development, infrastructure or maintenance. The images the drones will take will be processed using artificial intelligence and included in a status report that highlights areas which need to be repaired. This will lead to safer and more efficient inspections: lines can remain in service and no staff need to climb the pylons.

Elia makes overhead line in Ghent Canal Zone visible to birds
Bird markers are being installed on the high-voltage line along the R4 road in Evergem to make it more visible to birds. Elia is installing the diverters in collaboration with Natuurpunt, which has mapped out the lines which present the highest risk to birds in a study. Belgium has more than 5,600 kilometres of overhead power lines, 325 kilometres of which pose an increased risk to birds. Elia has already installed diverters along 50 kilometres of power lines. Initial monitoring by Natuurpunt shows that the number of birds injured and killed from collisions has since dropped drastically.
