Increasing capacity needed for Belgium's nuclear exit

On Friday, 28 June 2019, Elia published a new report on the need for adequacy and flexibility during the period 2020-2030. The accelerated coal exit in neighbouring countries has pushed up the replacement capacity Belgium needs to compensate for the nuclear exit in 2025 to around 3.9 GW. Speeding up the withdrawal from coal also means that additional capacity of up to more than 1 GW will be needed between 2022 and 2025, necessitating the implementation of further measures.  Elia is calling on the federal government to continue working on its development of the planned capacity remuneration mechanism (CRM) so that Belgium has a robust safety net in place to maintain its security of supply.

Any preferential rights that had not been exercised were offered to Belgian and international institutional investors. This second operation was fully completed in one hour. IO.Energy to select 8 pilot projects

The Internet of Energy project conducted by the Belgian system operators Elia, Fluvius, Ores, RESA and Sibelga is taking shape. Over the past few months, an ecosystem of around 60 organisations that have drawn up proposals has been set up. Eight of these proposals are mature enough to progress to the test phase. All of them are intended to enable end users to become active participants in balancing supply and demand. Using a digital communication platform, consumers can tailor their energy generation and consumption to grid requirements. This way IO.Energy will help to compensate for the fluctuations in renewable power generation. Projects whose test phases prove successful can then be scaled up into commercial applications.
