Nemo Link

Nemo Link launched successfully

Capacity on the subsea interconnector between Great Britain and Belgium has been available for purchase by implicit day-ahead auction since 30 January. Some 18,559 MWh of power was traded on the first day of operations. Nemo Link is a joint venture between Elia and British system operator National Grid. The cable has a capacity of 1,000 MW and is Elia’s first subsea interconnector in Belgium. It is also the country’s first high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) project.

More than 75 market players sign up for IO.Energy

Following the publication of our vision paper, in December Elia called on market players to take part in pilot projects to make a consumer-centric energy system possible. The call for participants was a resounding success: over 75 candidates have signed up for the IO.Energy pilot project. The next step will be to set up a sandbox for testing innovative concepts, with the test phase due to run until the end of 2019.

Elia publishes election memorandum

Elia has published its election memorandum ahead of the Belgian federal election in May 2019. In the memorandum, Elia underscores the need for a coordinated long-term energy policy and outlines the context, challenges and key considerations for the coming legislative period. Core priorities include further European market integration, infrastructure investments and the stimulation of new opportunities through digitisation and electrification, enabling consumers to play a central role.

Elia releases figures on the Belgian energy mix in 2018

Every year, Elia collects information about Belgium’s energy mix based on the generation units connected to the high-voltage grid. The figures it obtained for 2018 highlight the major trends for that year. Last year, Belgium saw a sharp drop in nuclear generation (50% to 34%), while imports accounted for 22% of the energy mix and the share of renewable generation grew by 18% in absolute terms.

Energy Not Supplied (ENS) hits a record low in 2018

ENS is the volume of energy that could not be supplied to our customers during interruptions caused by an internal problem at Elia. ENS is expressed in MWh and totalled 105.4 MWh in 2018, the lowest it has ever been.

Only interruptions lasting longer than three minutes count as ENS. Interruptions lasting less than three minutes are considered equivalent to Power Quality phenomena.

New external reporting point for business integrity breaches

Elia sets high standards for integrity. With that in mind, we have added a new external reporting point for business integrity breaches to our existing reporting channels. Internal staff and external stakeholders can use the new platform to anonymously report suspected integrity violations. The external reporting point handles breaches of our code of ethics that damage Elia’s reputation and/or interests, as well as suspicions that a criminal offence has been committed.

Support for sustainable citizens’ projects

Be Planet, Elia and Courcelles municipal council have selected six sustainable citizens’ projects from the Province of Hainaut to receive financial support.

Elia has been working with public utility foundation Be Planet for two years to foster sustainable citizens’ initiatives in the municipalities in which Elia is running infrastructure projects.

The partners were joined by Courcelles municipal council for their call for projects in Hainaut. They have earmarked a sum of €30,000 to provide material and/or financial support for the citizens’ projects.

Elia installs nesting box for kestrels in Deerlijk

Elia has installed a nesting box for kestrels on the high-voltage pylon in Paanderstraat in Deerlijk. The nesting box is around 10 metres from the ground and is a perfect place for the birds to breed. Kestrels mainly feed on small mammals, such as mice and voles. Attracting these mammals’ natural predators to the area enhances the balance of the ecosystem.

In recent years, Elia has set up no fewer than 56 nesting boxes for protected bird species, including kestrels, peregrine falcons and tawny owls. Some of these nesting boxes have been a great success: as many as 42 peregrine falcons have hatched in the box in Schelle since 2002.

Elia takes part in an offshore development workshop

On 22 January, Elia took part in a workshop on the development of the offshore grid, which was organised in Dunkirk by Renewable Grid Initiative (RGI) and French system operator RTE. Experts and energy sector players met there to discuss best practices with regard to nature conservation and the involvement of stakeholders in the marine environment. Offshore energy sources are set to account for an ever greater share of the European energy mix in future. Elia gave a presentation on the Modular Offshore Grid (MOG), the switchyard platform that, as of 2019, will bundle together cables from offshore wind farms and connect them to the mainland.

More than 16,000 MW of wind power for 50Hertz

At 8.45 p.m. on 13 January, 50Hertz’s control centre registered 16,000 MW of wind energy in the 50Hertz grid for the first time ever, a volume that equals the annual peak load in North-East Germany.

The share of renewable energy in the 50Hertz control area was around 57% in 2018, making 50Hertz a world leader in renewable energy.
