Board of Directors approves Elia Group’s new corporate structure

After receiving the regulator’s approval and being declared compliant with the Belgian Electricity Act, the Elia Group’s new corporate structure has been endorsed by the Board of Directors of Elia System Operator. The primary aim of the new structure is to isolate and separate Elia’s regulated activities in Belgium from its non-regulated and regulated activities outside Belgium, thus allowing us to pursue our ambitious growth strategy and capture opportunities that the energy transition brings. As part of the next step, an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting will be convened on 8 November 2019.

Multiple NEMO Arrangements (MNA) in Central West Europe (CWE)

On 2 July 2019, Multiple NEMO Arrangements (MNA) successfully went live in the Central West Europe (CWE) bidding zones. This was the culmination of two years’ work involving 18 partners (nine TSOs, three NEMOs and six third parties) and over eight months of extensive testing. CWE is the first European region to implement the MNA framework in compliance with CACM, thereby fostering competition in Europe’s core markets and supporting the aim of a fully integrated European Energy Market.

The introduction of MNA allows more than one NEMO (Nominated Electricity Market Operator) to access Single Day-Ahead Coupling in each bidding zone. To this end, all the NEMOs’ order books are forwarded to the centralised market-coupling algorithm for Single Day Ahead Coupling. Our newsletter will therefore no longer refer to the relevant Belpex data, but will instead provide a link to the new Belgian Bidding Zone day-ahead reference price table on the Grid Data section of the Elia website. Market participants can contact their Belgian NEMO (EPEX Spot or Nord Pool/EMCO) for more information about the opportunities presented by MNA in CWE.
