Stefan Kapferer start als CEO 50Hertz
 
New CEO 50Hertz 

Stefan Kapferer has taken up his role as CEO of Elia's German subsidiary 50Hertz. Kapferer brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the job. Until recently he headed up the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW), but he also has international experience and a strong network thanks to previous positions as Deputy Secretary-General of the OECD in Paris and State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

Elia Group publishes quarterly statement

Elia Group has published its interim statement for Q3 2019. Highlights are the confirmation of the financial outlook for 2019, the Board of Directors' approval of Elia Group's new corporate structure, the inauguration of the Modular Offshore Grid (MOG) and the signing of an MoU between 50Hertz and offshore wind developer Parkwind.

Stakeholders’ Day 2019

Elia held its annual Stakeholders' Day on 22 November. Over 150 guests from the Belgian energy sector were treated to a varied programme centred around the theme 'Accelerating the Energy Transition'. Particular highlights were the inspiring speeches on climate change and CO2 reduction respectively delivered by Belgian climate expert Jean-Pascal van Ypersele (from the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain)) and US environmental activist Paul Hawken. Many topics relating to both the Belgian and European electricity systems were also discussed.

Kanaal Z report on SAFIR

SAFIR is a consortium of 13 public and private organisations that is testing the use of drones for a wide range of applications in Belgium. As part of this consortium, Elia Group is using drones to inspect high-voltage lines. SAFIR's goal is to promote the implementation of drone services in Europe.

ENTSO-E celebrates 10th birthday  

The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) held a conference in Helsinki on 13 November to mark its 10th birthday. Elia's Chief External Relations Officer and Vice-Chair of the ENTSO-E Board Pascale Fonck reviewed the network's achievements over the past decade and outlined the vision for 2030, while Elia Group CEO Chris Peeters gave an introductory keynote speech on digital and innovative solutions.

As part of this year's European Utility Week in Paris, Elia Group CEO Chris Peeters participated in a panel discussion about the main challenges facing the energy sector, in which he stressed the importance of developing the necessary electrical and digital infrastructure. Head of Customer Relations David Zenner and Senior Innovation Project Leader Johan Maricq explained what Elia is doing to foster a consumer-centric energy system.  
 
 
 
Elia publishes adequacy study for Belgium

The probabilistic analysis for winter 2020-21 is an important element for the Federal Minister for Energy to take into account when deciding on the required volume of strategic reserve. The report also gives a preliminary outlook regarding the need for a strategic reserve for winters 2021-22 and 2022-23.

50Hertz set to make full use of green power

50Hertz and Neubrandenburger Stadtwerke are constructing an installation that will provide an environmentally-friendly heat source. The 30-megawatt facility will convert excess green electricity into heat, preventing overload on the grid and ensuring that renewable energy is not wasted. The project – the first of its kind in Germany – is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

SIDC parties confirm successful second wave go-live

Nominated electricity market operators and transmission system operators have confirmed the successful go-live of Wave 2, the second launch of Single Intraday Coupling (SIDC), formerly known as XBID. This step has expanded the continuous trading of electricity to Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovenia. A third wave go-live is expected by the end of 2020.
