Energy mix Belgium

Elia publishes annual figures on the energy mix in Belgium

These figures highlight the major trends for 2019. The main developments over the past year were a steady increase in (mainly offshore) renewable power generation, better availability of nuclear generating facilities and an increase in electricity exports. Belgium had not been a net exporter of electricity for almost 10 years, the last time being in 2009 and 2010.

Elia Group's new corporate structure implemented

The internal reorganisation was completed on 31 December 2019, meaning that the Elia Group is now a holding company and Elia's regulated activities in Belgium have been separated and ring-fenced from its non-regulated and regulated activities outside Belgium. This change to the Elia Group's corporate structure will also mean that its existing and future Belgian and European activities can be developed in line with the envisaged growth strategy.

Elia Group's European Stakeholders' Evening

Elia Group organises European Stakeholders' Evening in Brussels

On 12 December, more than 120 guests from the European energy sector came together for Elia and 50Hertz's first joint stakeholder event. This covered a variety of topical issues such as the Green Deal and the UN Climate Change Conference COP 25 in Madrid, and also saw the Elia Group present its new study entitled Future-proofing the EU Energy System towards 2030. The event featured various guest speakers and video statements, with German Federal Energy Minister Peter Altmaier among other things praising the Belgian/German cooperation within the Elia Group.

Future-proofing the EU Energy System towards 2030

With this new study, the Elia Group aims to raise awareness about the ever-growing challenges facing the European interconnected electricity system, in terms of both grid infrastructure (hardware) and market design (software). The joint study by Elia and 50Hertz proposes two levers to achieve the next phase of the energy transition promptly, efficiently and in a way that maximises prosperity for society.

Video message from the new EU Energy Commissioner

Kadri Simson, the new EU Commissioner for Energy, has spoken about the measures required to meet the ambitions set out in the European Green Deal. In a video message recorded for the Elia Group's European Stakeholders' Evening, she talks about accelerating the decarbonisation process, improving energy efficiency and integrating more renewable energy. System operators have a key role to play here, the Energy Commissioner says.

Sustainalytics classifies 50Hertz as an outperformer

50Hertz and its subsidiary Eurogrid have once again improved their sustainability rating. In the latest edition of the Sustainalytics Environment, Social and Governance report, they scored 79 points out of 100 (2018: 72 points; 2017: 67 points), placing them 20th out of 193 companies from the global energy industry and earning them 'outperformer' status. This positive rating will help 50Hertz secure funding for sustainable energy projects such as offshore wind farms.

Further step towards CRM legislation

On Thursday, 19 December, Elia took part in a hearing of the Belgian Federal Parliament's Energy Committee concerning the capacity remuneration mechanism (CRM). It attended alongside CREG and the FPS Economy, who, like Elia, sit on a working group charged with drawing up the statutory tasks under the CRM legislation. Meanwhile, Federal Energy Minister Marie Christine Marghem has formally notified the European Commission about the mechanism.

The CRM comes in response to the call for action that Elia issued in 2017. According to Elia, it is needed to ensure that there is sufficient replacement capacity to cope with the planned nuclear exit.

SeaMade connected to the MOG

SeaMade connected to MOG power hub

The SeaMade wind farm was connected to the Modular Offshore Grid (MOG) in December. The electricity it generates will be brought ashore via this switching platform, allowing SeaMade to supply 500,000 households in Belgium with renewable energy each year. The cable work was carried out in record time by DEME's cable-laying vessel Living Stone.

Additional step for Ventilus Regional Land-Use Plan

Following the extensive feedback received during the public consultation on the Ventilus project, the Flemish government's Environment Department is launching a dialogue between stakeholders and independent experts. Its main aim will be to examine the feasibility of installing the system underground. Ventilus is a new high-voltage connection in West Flanders that will deliver a much-needed upgrade to the Belgian electricity grid, among other things enabling the increasing volumes of wind energy generated in the North Sea to be brought inland.

Artificial Intelligence 50Hertz

50Hertz uses artificial intelligence to estimate grid losses

Resistance in the cables means that some electricity is inevitably converted into heat. The further the electricity has to travel, the greater the grid losses. For 50Hertz, which transmits large quantities of renewable energy, this is a very important consideration as generation sites are located far from consumption centres. To predict grid losses more accurately, 50Hertz has developed a new model based on artificial intelligence. This more accurate calculation means that 50Hertz can purchase in advance the right amount of additional energy to offset its grid losses.

Germany to use world's first 525-kV DC underground cables

In a world first, the four German transmission system operators 50Hertz, Amprion, TenneT and TransnetBW are set to use direct current underground cables with a voltage level of 525 kilovolts (kV) on the planned major connections SuedLink, SuedOstLink and A‑Nord. Until now, Germany has used 320‑kV cables for connections of this type. The greater voltage means that fewer cables will be needed for the same capacity, thereby minimising the impact on the surroundings and the wider environment
