Chancellor Merkel opens 50Hertz offshore project

The new Arkona offshore wind farm (E.ON & Equinor) was officially inaugurated on Tuesday 16 April in a ceremony attended by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The project is part of 50Hertz's Ostwind1 project connecting the Arkona and Wikinger wind farms to the onshore transmission grid. 50Hertz is using a 220-kV three-phase cable for the first time. The work in the German Baltic Sea took three years and was completed within the €1.3 billion investment budget. The 90-km submarine cables connect to the high-voltage substation in Lumin.

Elia appointed Belgian system operator until 2042

The draft ministerial decree renewing the appointment of Elia System Operator SA/NV as the operator of Belgium's electricity grid was passed on Friday 26 April. The renewal was proposed by the Energy Minister Marie Christine Marghem and applies for a 20-year period starting on 17 September 2022. The Federal Council of Ministers' decision was taken in accordance with the Act of 29 April 1999 on the organisation of the electricity market.
 
 
 
Green light for Federal Development Plan 2020-2030

The Energy Minister Marie Christine Marghem has approved the Federal Development Plan 2020-2030. As the system operator, Elia is legally obliged to draw up such a plan every four years. The document describes the changing context of the energy transition and pinpoints the expected bottlenecks and missing links in the transmission system. In the Federal Development Plan, Elia proposes an investment programme that will meet future needs. It organised a public consultation on the plan in late 2018, with the comments being incorporated into the final version.

Elia Group Annual Report 2018 now online

Elia Group's Annual Report looks back on a successful 2018. This year's report consists of three parts: the Activity Report, the Sustainability Report and the Financial Report, where we inform our stakeholders about our projects, corporate social responsibility, and financial results, corporate governance and risk management, respectively. The online version is available on our website and the paper version will be released at the general meeting on 21 May 2019.

Elia and 50Hertz publish first consolidated Sustainability Report

Elia Group has the ambition to act in the interest of society for all of its activities. To manage our CSR performance and further integrate sustainability into our strategy, we progressed in the alignment of reporting methods between Elia and 50Hertz in 2018. For the first time, our Sustainability Report includes information for both Elia and 50Hertz.

Elia contemplates internal reorganisation project

Elia is considering implementing an internal reorganisation project to update its organisational structure. This would enable it to isolate and ring-fence its Belgian regulated activities from its non-regulated activities. In addition, Elia's Board of Directors has unanimously decided that an extraordinary shareholders' meeting will be convened on 21 May 2019 to request authorisation for the Board of Directors to increase the company's capital (authorised capital).

50Hertz wins Innovator of the Year 2019 award

German business magazine brand eins has named 50Hertz an Innovator of the Year 2019 in the 'Energy' category. It was the only one of Germany's transmission system operators to win the accolade. 50Hertz received the same score in the innovation survey as for example Red Bull, Nike and Miele.

Catherine Vandenborre nominated for CFO of the Year

For the second year in a row, Catherine Vandenborre has been nominated for the CFO of the Year award organised by business magazine Trends/Tendances. The jury chose Catherine for her involvement in the acquisition and successful financing of an additional stake in German subsidiary 50Hertz. The winner will be announced on Wednesday 15 May.

Elia also nominated for Deal of the Year

For the first time, Trends/Tendances is also presenting a trophy for the Deal of the Year. All mergers, acquisitions and capital operations in 2018 involving a Belgian company are eligible for the award. Again, Elia was nominated for the successful transaction that saw it increase its stake in 50Hertz from 60 to 80%. The winner will also be announced on Wednesday 15 May.

Ventilus to prepare power grid for more sustainable energy

On 1 April, the Flemish government and Elia jointly unveiled plans for 'Ventilus', a new high-voltage project in West Flanders. Flemish Environment Minister Koen Van den Heuvel and Governor of West Flanders Carl Decaluwé both attended a press conference on the subject. The project is crucial for connecting additional onshore and offshore renewable power generation and exchanging international energy flows. Ventilus' route will be determined once the general public and interest groups have had their say.

Work starts on ALEGrO microtunnel between the Albert Canal and the Meuse

Early April saw the start of a new construction phase in the ALEGrO project: horizontal drilling of the microtunnel between the Albert Canal and the River Meuse. The microtunnel is being dug at a depth of 30 m and will be 670 m long when completed, with a diameter of 2 m.

The ALEGrO project is building the first electrical interconnector between Belgium and Germany. The 90-km HVDC underground connection will have a capacity of 1,000 MW and will link Elia's high-voltage power grid in Belgium with that of Amprion in Germany.

MOG switchyard platform leaves yard


The switchyard platform for the Modular Offshore Grid (MOG) left the construction yard in Zwijndrecht in the Netherlands in early April. The structure was loaded onto a barge and will be assembled on the jacket (support structure) in the North Sea at a later date. Elia's first 'plug at sea' will bundle together the cables of future offshore wind farms and connect them to Belgium's onshore grid. The MOG will be commissioned in the third quarter of 2019. The full capacity will be available in 2020.

Elia launches new mobile app eTripLog

In April, staff at the MAC department began using an iPhone app called eTripLog, which automatically records their journeys and calculates the number of kilometres they travel. eTripLog is part of Elia's Digital Solutions programme, which aims to use digital technology to simplify administrative processes for field personnel.

 
 
Kanaal Z report on Elia's expansion projects

Elia is currently rolling out the biggest investment programme in its history. As well as building an offshore power grid and interconnectors, it is also implementing a raft of expansion projects aimed, among other things, at enabling new industrial developments. Though smaller, these projects are nevertheless key to Belgium's socio-economic development.

Two Elia company restaurants awarded prestigious Good Food label

Our canteens in Brussels have been awarded the Good Food label, picking up a prestigious 'two forks' rating for their use of organic produce, seasonal fruit and vegetables and the provision of vegetarian alternatives, as well as their environmental commitment and efforts to tackle food waste.

Set up by Brussels Environment, the Good Food label is a badge of quality given to company canteens that work hard to promote healthy and sustainable food.
