No physical attendance at general meetings

Due to the coronavirus crisis, shareholders are prohibited from physically attending the Elia Group ordinary and extraordinary general meetings on 19 May 2020. The Board of Directors took this step in line with Royal Decree No. 4 of 9 April 2020, which was issued by lawmakers to limit the spread of COVID-19. Shareholders will only be able to exercise their voting rights by proxy (the Secretary-General) or via ballot paper. Questions can be submitted in writing. See our website for more information about the practical details.

Elia Taskforce

Taskforce Elia on Canal Z

Elia has appeared on the Kanaal Z/Canal Z show 'Z-Energy' to explain how it is tackling the coronavirus crisis. Belgium went into semi-lockdown on 16 March in an attempt to combat the spread of the virus. However, the federal government wants key sectors to continue operating where possible. As operator of the high-voltage grid, Elia carries out essential activities. Several members of the internal taskforce outline the special measures implemented in the field and at the national control centre.

#WeStayConnected

Virtual meetings, Skype calls and after-work drinks over Zoom have recently become part of our working lives. The transition to remote working was particularly smooth for Elia employees. The company has long championed this form of working, so the digital work environment was operational immediately. Tighter measures regarding safety, hygiene and social distancing have been enacted for the 500 employees still in the field. Our employees are leading by example.  #LetsFlattenTheCurve

#StrongerTogether

In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, Elia's mission - namely to work 'in the interest of society' - is more relevant than ever before. We continue to work where it is useful, necessary and responsible to do so. We also support our colleagues' heart-warming initiatives. Shanna from HR organised a collection of analogue telephones for her grandmother's residential care home, while Kris from Innovation helped develop an emergency ventilator.

Energy consumption Belgium

Power consumption down 16% in Belgium

We have recorded a clear drop in Belgium's electricity consumption since the coronavirus measures came into force. Consumption fell gradually following the announcements on 12 and 17 March. The downward trend is very clear to see on the graph below, which compares current consumption with the average over the past five years. The electricity system is still balanced and continues to run smoothly. In addition, there is sufficient margin for balancing the system (upward or downward).

Power consumption down 8% in Germany

The measures introduced in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak have had a slightly less noticeable impact on the German grid. Elia’s German subsidiary 50Hertz has recorded an average drop in consumption of 8%. Many sectors, such as the car industry, are still up and running. Those in the steel industry are even working overtime now that electricity prices are particularly low. The measures implemented at 50Hertz to ensure business continuity are very similar to those enacted at Elia. Both companies liaise on a daily basis.

Electricity price hits record low

The coronavirus crisis has also affected the electricity price on the short-term (day-ahead) market. Enough electricity is being generated in both Belgium and its neighbouring countries, but demand is down. This pushes down the price per MWh and may continue to do so as long as demand remains low. The average price hit €24 per MWh in March, a record low.

50Hertz sets new record for solar energy

On Monday 23 March, 50Hertz successfully integrated 8,500 MW of solar power, a new record. The first few months of 2020 also saw above-average wind generation. 85% of the electricity consumed in February came from wind or solar power. 50Hertz is one of Europe's leaders when it comes to the integration of renewable energy.
