e-mobility vision paper

Vision paper identifies three enablers for the rapid and massive advent of electric cars

In its vision paper entitled Accelerating to Net-Zero Elia Group describes the social importance of better coordination between the energy and mobility sectors. Transport accounts for a quarter of the European CO2 emissions. With electric vehicle technology maturing, the mobility sector can decarbonise quickly and on a large scale. The vision paper defines three key enablers for the transition: physical and digital infrastructure, access to open data and market rules for new customer services. These will not only deliver a better driving experience and additional consumer benefits, but also a more sustainable energy and mobility sector.

Brabo II
Brabo II: 380-kV loop around the port of Antwerp enters service
On 27 November 2020, Elia commissioned the upgraded 380-kV high-voltage line along the A12 between Zandvliet and Lillo. An existing overhead line was upgraded from 150 kV to 380 kV, with 46 pylons replaced and new electric wires laid over 16 kilometres. Thanks to a new type of pylon, the view is almost the same. The upgraded high-voltage line enables Elia to transmit electricity more efficiently.

Ostwind 2 on track to meet EU offshore targets
Work on the Ostwind 2 project in the Baltic Sea is on schedule. The Ostwind 2 submarine power cables will connect the Arcadis Ost 1 and Baltic Eagle offshore wind farms to 50Hertz's onshore grid. The wind farms will go online in 2023 and have a capacity of 725 MW. According to the European Commission's recent offshore strategy, Europe must increase offshore wind capacity over the next 10 years from 12 to 60 GW, eventually reaching 300 GW by 2050.

European Commission grants exemption to first hybrid interconnector
50Hertz welcomes the European Commission's decision to grant an exception for the interconnection capacity of the Combined Grid Solution project. This German-Danish hybrid project in the Baltic Sea combines the cables from an interconnector with those from a wind farm. Under current legislation 70% of interconnector capacity must be put on the market for electricity trading. In a hybrid solution, the wind farms would be disadvantaged. The exemption stipulates that, after deducting forecast wind production, the remaining capacity must be made available to the market. This will mean the full utilisation of electricity output from the Kriegers Flak, Baltic 1 and Baltic 2 wind farms.

50Hertz EVs
50Hertz and Stromnetz Berlin join forces to integrate electric vehicles into grid

Millions of electric cars will play a role in the distribution system in Germany in the years ahead. To ensure they can also contribute to system stability, data exchange is required via smart metering infrastructure – which is why distribution system operator Stromnetz Berlin and transmission system operator 50Hertz are running a joint project to investigate and test what data exchange is required to this end and how balancing power can be provided by a network of electric cars. For 50Hertz this is an important part of its strategy to meet 100% of electricity demand in the grid area with renewable energy sources by 2032.

No need for strategic reserves in Belgium for winter 2021-2022

30 November Elia published its adequacy report for winter 2021-2022. The federal energy minister uses the report (and other factors) as the basis for their decision about the need for and volume of strategic reserves. In addition to the basic scenario, Elia also carried out a sensitivity analysis on the availability of the nuclear fleet in Belgium and France. Since even this more extreme scenario resulted in a margin of 0 MW, Elia is of the opinion it is not necessary to provide a strategic reserve for the coming winter. The minister will take a final decision by 15 January 2021 at the latest.
