Interconnector Denmark - Belgium

Hybrid interconnector with Denmark is important next step in making Belgian electricity system more sustainable

The Belgian and Danish energy ministers, Tinne Van der Straeten and Dan Jørgensen, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the development of an electricity interconnector. It is now up to the system operators in both countries to start a feasibility study. Elia (Belgium) and Energinet (Denmark) are working on a letter of intent, which will be formalised in a few weeks. The interconnector between Belgium and Denmark would be a hybrid interconnector that is also connected to large-scale wind farms (10 GW) located 90 km off the Danish coast. In addition to being connected to a new electricity market, Belgium will also have access to the mass generation of renewable energy.

Elia Group's German subsidiary, 50Hertz, has also started a collaborative venture with Danish grid operator Energinet. They are joining forces on the Bornholm Energy Island project in the Baltic Sea, connecting Germany and Denmark via an offshore hub. About 2000 MW of wind capacity is planned for Bornholm. In the future, other Baltic countries will be able to join the bilateral arrangement.

Employees can take speed pedelec course

Elia employees will soon be able to take an individual training course to learn to ride a speed pedelec more safely. This is the result of collaboration with VIAS, the independent Belgian knowledge institute for road safety. The super-fast electric bicycle is becoming increasingly popular, but it is not without its hazards. Elia wants to encourage the use of speed pedelecs and send its employees safely on their way. CEO Chris Peeters has already set a good example.

An algorithm is being developed that can analyse images to detect irregularities at an early stage. This will enable maintenance work on high-voltage lines to be more focused and more efficient. Some 400 pylons will be analysed this way in Belgium in 2021.

Digital information session on upgrading the north-south corridor
Elia is upgrading the Belgian electricity grid between the Mercator and Bruegel high-voltage substations in Kruibeke and Dilbeek, respectively. The existing overhead line will be equipped with a new type of conductor that can transmit more current, allowing Elia to better distribute and transmit increased electricity flows throughout the country in the future. This is necessary in order to continue ensuring security of supply for the country. Due to the corona measures, the information session was a digital event.

Permit granted to upgrade Massenhoven-Van Eyck corridor

Elia has begun upgrading the high-voltage line between Zandhoven and Kinrooi in Limburg. This line will also be equipped with a new type of conductor that can transmit more current. The line runs right through a number of woodland nature reserves. If trees come too close to high-voltage lines, electricity can flash over and cause malfunctions, which means that surrounding vegetation and trees will have to be cut back and pruned. Once the work is complete, the surrounding nature area will be restored and enhanced. Elia has devised a nature management plan for this purpose. Work is expected to be completed by late 2024.
